Cone Earring and Lily Pendant Tutorial

Did you know that you can create a round form with a hammer?! Well, that is what this tutoral is all about. Start with a flat piece of metal and coax it into a cone (spiculum) shape with nothing more than a hammer and a grooved block. The result is a stunning jewelry set. The same techniques can be applied to create your own cone ends for use in necklaces, bracelets and other jewelry applications.

The tutorial is 12 Pages long and features 48 full color images. Includes a section on troubleshooting, how to choose the right hammer and templates.

Materials needed:

  • 28 - 24 gauge sterling silver or copper dead soft sheet – 1 ½” x 6”
  • 18 – 20  gauge sterling dead soft silver wire – 18 inches
  • Seed beads (optional)

Optional Tools:

  • Small butane torch
  • Soldering surface
  • Insulated cross locking tweezers
  • Quench bowl
  • Pickle & Pickle pot
  • Tumbler or soft brass brush
  • Rubber Cement or white glue

Tools and supplies:

  • Straight shop shears or jewelers saw
  • Permanent marker
  • Files: hand, needle
  • 3M Micro finishing film or Sandpaper in various grits
  • Wire cutters
  • Anvil or Bench block
  • Forming/swage block (wood, plastic or steel)
  • Cross peen/narrow raising hammer (Steel or plastic)
  • Goldsmith’s or planishing hammer
  • Center punch
  • Tumbler
  • Patina solution if desired
